Yellow. {POTD}

Our front door is red. Bright red. And I am a little bit (okay, maybe a lot bit) funny about colors.

You see, I love pink flowers. And purple flowers. But they aren't in the same warm color family as my red door, so I can't plant them. I'm sure there's a rule somewhere that says so. And if there isn't, there should be...

So I plant flowers that are red, or orange, or sometimes white.

But mostly? I plant flowers that are yellow. They make me happy.

And they don't clash with my red door.

Which makes me happier.

Let's Flip!

Over the past few years we've tried enrolling the girls in a variety of sports-related activities:
T-ball? Hated it.

Basketball? Um, no thanks.

Dance? It's okay, but not our favorite.

Tumbling? LOVE IT! And I mean L.O.V.E. it! Their little, strong, bendy bodies are just made for this stuff.

They just turned 7 and they're doing back walkovers!

Next year they want to leave the dance school tumbling program and move to a school that focuses entirely on tumbling.

Maroon and White: Spring Game in Blacksburg

It's hard not to be a Hokie fan in our house! But we've been hesitant to take the girls to a football game yet. After all, it's not cheap, and who wants to spend the game listening to whining?

Kevin and I have been tossing around the idea of going to the Spring game this year. When the morning of the game dawned with gorgeous weather, we decided the time had come to take the whole family up to Blacksburg.
So far, so good! Apparently they've decided that tailgating is fun.
The guys enjoyed watching the warm ups and seeing some of the famous football alumni down on the field.
The girls' favorite part were the snacks, especially the lemon ices, but in between snacking they took turns sitting on daddy's lap.

After the game, the field was open for the fans to come down and get autographs from the players.

{ETA: you know the guy who lost the tip of his thumb during a game this fall and just kept on playing? THIS is that guy! How cool that I got his picture and his autograph!}
The lines for Tyrod Taylor and Ryan Williams were so long! I stood with the girls at one end of the field and collected signatures on Ryan's and Kevin's baseball hats while the boys waited in line to hopefully get one of the "big" autographs.

The autograph session was formally over, but Ryan Williams hung out a little longer. Our Ryan wormed his way towards the front of the line with his VT jersey and a sharpie (it was his #34 jersey, Ryan Williams' number). We stood back and hoped for the best...

When Ryan emerged from the crowd, his grin told the story!

Busy Little Birds {POTD}

Every time we would open our front door over the past week, we noticed birds flying around our porch.

Today, Kevin discovered their little secret in our wreath:

Small.

Sometimes you just have to stop, and stare in wonder. And be humbled by how truly small we are before our Creator. And marvel at how He shows us His love, and reveals Himself to us in our world.

Dessert for Dinner? It must be April First!

Life can be so serious. And as parents the weight of teaching our children about healthy eating can be daunting.

Thank goodness for the fun of creating family traditions! A few years ago I decided to throw my kids a curve ball and surprise them with dessert for dinner on April Fool's Day. The delight they felt when they came in and saw a table laden with doughnuts and cookies and other treats didn't come close to what I was feeling about their reaction.
They had forgotten about my little "trick" by the next April, and so I got to experience their surprise a second time. Now this little break from our normal routine is anticipated and has become a family tradition. And Kev and I have fun coming up with new ways to inject a little bit of surprise.

This year? We decided on an ice cream sundae bar.

And they were thoroughly delighted.
